Movie Trailer Roundup
We got some Yuuuuuuge trailers this week, and also some pretty funny ones for trashy TV Movies as well.
1. The Old Man & The Gun (Trailer #2)
In what is to be Robert Redford‘s last film,’The Old Man & The Gun’ is a rendition of the real criminal and escape artist, Forrest Tucker. Both this trailer and the first make this seem like a very pleasant crime-comedy to help sign off Redfords historic career. Besides Redford, it stars Sissy Spacek (Carrie), Casey Affleck (Manchester by the Sea), Danny Glover (Lethal Weapon) and Tom Waits (Seven Psychopaths). Directed off his own adapted script is David Lowrey (Pete’s Dragon).
2. My Dinner with HERVÉ
This marks back to back rough attempts at accents for Dinklage between this, and his role as Eitri in ‘Avengers: Infinity War’. I really don’t know much about ‘Fantasy Island’ other than Ricardo Montalban and Villechaize’s iconic “De Plane, De Plane” line, however I do know Villechaize had a very rough life leading into his suicide due to his medical conditions. I’m interested, but hope the accent plays better in this HBO Film. Jamie Dornan (Fifty Shades of Grey) and Andy Garcia (Ocean’s 11) are co-starring on this Sacha Gervasi (Hitchcock) project.
3. Devious Nanny
Porno-ass title. I’m only including this TV movie because its utterly hilarious how they spoiled the whole movie in the trailer.
4. A Private War
A rendition of real-life journalist Marie Colvin’s life based on “Marie Colvin’s Private War”, this looks like it will be a well acted film on a limited budget. Journalist’s have an extremely important, and often times scary, job in today’s society. This is especially true when covering conflicts in high risk regions like Syria, where Colvin was killed in what some say was a targeted assassination by the Syrian government. This stars one of my favorite actresses in the business, Rosamund Pike (Gone Girl), as well as Jamie Dornan (Fifty Shades of Grey), Tucci Mayne (The Hunger Games) and Tom Hollander (Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End). Matthew Heineman (Cartel Land) is directing.
5. Alright Now
Wyd Robin Scherbatsky? A movie where an adult goes back to college is not new territory, The setting not being a US-based school is sort of interesting, but not enough to hold my attention. It stars Cobie Smulders (How I Met Your Mother) and Jessica Hynes (Shaun of the Dead).
6. Bad Times at the El Royale (Trailer #2)
Butter overload, baby. The first trailer was more of a divided focus, and only teased Hemsworth. This one gave us a deeper look at what he’s all about in this movie and Chris, I LOVE YOU BABAYYYYY. I can’t wait for this film which stars Chris Hemsworth (Avengers: Infinity War), Dakota Johnson (Fifty Shades of Grey), Jon Hamm (Mad Men), Nick Offerman (Parks & Recreation), Jeff Bridges (The Big Lebowski) and Cynthia Erivo (Widows). This is written and directed by Drew Goddard who wrote/directed “Cabin in the Woods” and adapted the screenplay for “The Martian” which I loved.
7. Bayou Caviar
I have no clue what the hell is going on in this trailer, but this right here is a bad look:
I’d say having 3 of your producers, your cinematographer, and all 5 of your production companies not having wiki articles is actually bad. That won’t steer me away from watching some Louisiana drama, though! I retain that Cuba Gooding Jr. is a good actor, and that Men of Honor will make me tear up 10/10 times. That said, Cuba was utterly hilarious in ‘The People v. O. J. Simpson: American Crime Story’.
8. Air Strike
At first, I thought this might be about the Flying Tigers which were an all volunteer group of Americans fighting in the Chinese Air Force. They fought the hell out of the Japanese Air Force, outperforming other American fighter groups across the Pacific for most of the first few years of WW2 despite having inferior numbers, supplies, and military intelligence. Now THAT would make for a great movie. ‘Air Strike’, however, is an all Chinese production that looks to have grabbed a western star to get some broader appeal, which is standard practice. The CGI looks pretty bad, as well as the acting. I’ll be damned if I’m not ready for a dogfight movie, though. Bruce Willis (Die Hard), Ye Liu (Curse of the Golden Flower), Seung-heon Song (Obsessed), and Adrien Brody (The Pianist) star in this movie from Xiao Feng (Hushed Roar). Question, is Adrien Brody abandoning Hollywood for the Chinese cinema life??
9. I Think We’re Alone Now
This is a more expansive look at how this movie is going to look, and I like the colors and sound they’re going with. The base plot from the summary is that it’s two people are the only ones left after an extinction level event. It stars Peter Dinklage(Game of Thrones), Elle Fanning (Super 8), and Paul Giamatti (Cinderella Man). It’s directed by Reed Morano (The Handmaid’s Tale) and written by Mike Makowsky (Take Me). ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ has gotten an insane amount of love, so if Morano can bring that same vibe to this story I’d imagine it’s well worth a watch.
10. The Front Runner
This is how you do a great trailer for a political movie. The story of Gary Hart, a senator who was supposed to be the easy choice to take on George H.W. Bush in the 1988 election before his campaign was derailed when his infidelity was exposed. Instead, the democrats were left with Dukakis and his stupid tank picture, and got absolutely washed by Bush (in electoral votes, at least). I’m not sure if this is supposed to be a dig at Trump/Bill Clinton for being notorious cheaters who didn’t have their political power affected by being shitty husbands/fathers, but its an independently interesting story. I love the use of ‘Sinnerman’ in the backdrop of the trailer and am a huge Jackman guy, so lets see where this goes! Hugh Jackman (Logan), Vera Farmiga (The Departed), J.K. Simmons (Whiplash), Alfred Molina (Spiderman 2) and friend of the program Bill Burr (Rough & Rowdy) all star in this Jason Reitman (Up in the Air) directed movie.
11. Predator (Final Trailer)
It’s probably going to suck and disappoint like every other Predator movie after the original, but I’m still sort of excited to see it. It’s directed by Shane Black (The Nice Guys, Iron Man 3) and written by him and Fred Dekker (Tales from the Crypt, Robocop 3). Obviously, Black was in the original ‘Predator’. However, I don’t see a ton of influence from that experience in any of the trailers for the movie. The best aspects from the original was the quiet, the suspense, the small scale, and the mystery. The trailers make it seem to be the opposite. It’s loud, has heavy CGI, huge scale action (literally a scaled up alien), and the alien is known to everyone. Could it be good? Yea, sure. There’s some funny lines, at least in this trailer. I’m just tempering my expectations. There is a huge cast, including Boyd Holbrook (Logan, Narcos), Trevante Rhodes (Moonlight), Jacob Tremblay (Room, Wonder, Book of Henry), Keegan Michael Key (More movies and shows than I can count), Olivia Munn (The Newsroom, X-Men: Apocalypse), Sterling K Brown (This is Us, Black Panther), Tom Jane (The Mist, The Punisher), Alfie Allen (Game of Thrones, John Wick) and Jake Busey (Starship Troopers).
